What is Pind Daan?
Pind Daan is a vital Hindu ritual performed to pay homage to the departed souls (ancestors). According to the Garuda Purana, performing Pind Daan in Gaya Ji provides ultimate salvation (Moksha) to the ancestors, freeing them from the cycle of rebirth.
Why Gaya Ji?
Gaya Ji in Bihar is considered the holiest place for performing Shradh rituals. Lord Rama, along with Mata Sita and Lakshmana, visited Gaya to perform the Pind Daan of his father, King Dasharatha. The presence of the sacred Phalgu River and the footprints of Lord Vishnu at the Vishnupad Temple make it spiritually supreme.
The Ritual Process
The ritual involves offering 'Pindas' (round balls made of rice flour, oat flour, dried milk, and sesame seeds) to the ancestors under the guidance of knowledgeable Vedic Pandits. It is accompanied by specific mantras and prayers for peace.
